He married Johanna Maria Maré (great-grandfather’s uncle’s great-great-great-niece), daughter of Paulus Maré and Johanna Magdalena Pretorius, on March 4, 1821 in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape. She was baptized on November 4, 1804.
