He married Elizabeth Susanna “Johanna” van den Berg (first cousin’s wife’s step-mother’s first cousin), daughter of Izak Jacobus van den Berg and Elisabeth Susanna Joubert,. She was born on December 19, 1836 in Graaff-Reinet, Eastern Cape.
