Sophia Maria Jacoba van der Merwe, daughter of Willem Schalk van der Merwe and Anna Louisa Jacobs, was born on May 6, 1812 in Tulbagh, Western Cape and died on November 20, 1842 in Onder-Bokkeveld, Calvinia, Northern Cape at the age of 30. She married 2 times. The first time she married Izaak Johannes van der Merwe (third cousin), son of Carel Aaron van der Merwe and Elsie Johanna van Heerden, before 1831. He was born on April 8, 1809. The second time she married Heremias Cornelis Nieuwoudt (great-great-aunt’s step-son’s wife’s nephew), son of Jeremias Cornelis Nieuwoudt and Jacoba Botma, on May 16, 1841 in Clanwilliam, Western Cape. He was born on December 14, 1787 in Klynfontein, Clanwilliam, Western Cape and died on March 4, 1859 in Dist. Calvinia, Northern Cape at the age of 71.
