He married Maria Susanna van der Merwe (first cousin once removed ascending), daughter of Isak van der Merwe and Anna Susanna van Heerden, on February 23, 1794. She was born about 1774 in Camdeboo, Dist. Graaff-Reinet, Eastern Cape and died on January 26, 1859 in Graaff-Reinet, Eastern Cape.
