Thursday 6 August 1840

DIED at Graham's Town on Monday last, the 3rd inst. of Brain Fever, Mr. E.J.TOWNSEND at the early age of 30 years. Deceased was held in much esteem as an upright Tradesman and an intelligent man. He has left an amiable Wife to deplore the loss of a most affectionate Husband - a young Family of a tender Parent; while the Church to which he was united (the Independents) is deprived of one of its most active and valuable members, and the world at large of a good and useful citizen.

Death date: Edward Joseph TOWNSEND (-1840)

On 6th August the Grahamstown Journal publishes notice of his death "3rd inst". On 14th August, John Townsend files a death notice with date of death "second of August" and on 28th August, Edwards's widow files a death notice with date of death "4th August". Presumably he died between 3rd and 4th August, so I am keeping the date recorded by his widow.
